Opinions – yes, many

/

Above is the opinion page of the Times Colonist.

I read it every day – all the editorials, op-eds, and letters to the editor.

Does it reflect the views of all Victorians?

No – far from it.

I’ve spoken with literally thousands of Victoria residents, and newspaper opinion pages clearly represent a minority. Everyone has a perspective, including the Times Colonist. So I look at other sources too.

I read the Globe and Mail opinion page, which has a different perspective, and on a broad range of topics.

Is that enough? No! …

I also listen to CBC’s Gregor Craigie, On The Island show in the morning, and read the CBC News website, and read independent, employee-owned CHEK.

Is that enough? No! I also read a few social media platforms.

Is that enough? No! I have other media sources of course, but the most important thing is direct interactions: Email, phone calls, meetings, and of course coffee chats.

As I wrote earlier, there are all sorts of opinions on every topic. Here’s an example from another post:

Last night I attended a meeting of the Victoria Community Association Network (VCAN). One of the attendees suggested that the draft OCP Update should concentrate development more, and not spread it out. This person happened to be from a “traditional residential” neighbourhood (one that is mainly single-detached houses).

And of course I’ve heard from residents of built-up areas such as James Bay and Downtown / Harris Green that those areas “have done enough” and future development should be spread out more.

On Council, we don’t just listen to one perspective. We need to listen to them all. So it’s all the more important to have a range of inputs.

Many thanks to Victoria residents and businesses who share their thoughts every day. You are appreciated.
